The Acura line of luxury automobile’s auspicious beginnings were born in the planning rooms of Honda Motors. The Japanese car giant had a higher end vehicle in mind that would feature many luxury appointments and technological advancements to compete with established luxury automakers. Honda executives decided that this new car would be better positioned in the crowded new car market under its own brand, and in 1984, the Acura name was announced as a new division catering directly to luxury car buyers.
In 1986, 60 charter Acura dealerships were charged with introducing the new Acura Integra and Acura Legend. They sold over 52,000 of them that first year and gave rise to another 150 dealerships to follow. Acura’s success prompted the other Japanese carmakers to launch their own luxury brands under the Infiniti and Lexus monikers. Continually innovating, in 1989 Acura launched the NSX model, the first mass-produced aluminum body automobile powered by a revolutionary engine that featured electronic variable valve timing and lift.
